A good friend of mine is to restore his two Trabants and needs some body parts, can you direct me to a good supplier of Trabant body parts, for smaller items I have bought from Danzer Autoteile where I have got an excellent service from Ms. Danzer.

Hi Icetrabi
how many Trabis are there in Iceland?

Otherwise the allready named Baller is OK for many small parts, even small parts of gearbox etc.

What parts are you looking for?

There are 48 registered Trabis in Iceland and I own the newest registrated one as I bought this one from a lady in Berlin end of last year as she was moving to Switzerland it was a car in very good condition and I love driving it. The little of parts I have needed I have got from Ms. Danzer at Danzer Autoteile, but my friend who is restoring two Kombi´s needs quite a lot of metal body parts which Danzer Autoteile seems not have much of. I have an original parts book for the Trabant but it seems not helping a lot as the words/names used in the parts book are in most cases different from what is used today and as I do not speak German as I have only been learning it since last autumn but one day I will be able to communicate in German.

OH this more then in here in Switzerland it seems!

There are some english written service manuals around, will see if it is possible to catch a copy somewhere.

Otherwise try to download the whole catalogue from www.autoteile-baller.de.
This you have to extract and then install on your computer. Somehow unusual , but this is how it works there. He has lost of components not often sold in onlineshops. However just usual consumable parts which you can get in onlineshops I would get from there, since Mr Baller has sometimes his rather own ideas about pricing...

A lady that moved to Switzerland and did not take the Trabi with her? Pitty! This is namely the most simple way to register a Trabi in Switzerland, if it is brought in by someone moving from outside of the contry here.

@ Icetrabi:

Do you know Oddur Kjartansson from Reykjavik? He also owns a Trabi and we already were in contact by e-mail.

I think there had been exported about 130 Trabants to Island, still in the late eighties - about 1987.

Do you know more about the plans of the Islandish government to force all people to drive with hydrogen-engines? A friend of mine told me that such a law will be soon established...

I do not know Oddur personally but I know of his Trabant, in the early days between 1970 and 1983 there where several hundreds Trabant´s imported and there are 48 still registered, although most of them their license plates kept with the authorities (not on the vehicle)and I believe Oddur Trabant is one of them. Regarding the Hydrogen engines there are no legislation of forcing us using it in the future, however it all depends on the results Daimler/Chrysler is doing together with the Icelandic government using two transport buses, there has been some problems they are overcoming but the project is of interest.
