Hallo

Right at first I have to apologise my use of English language, but I unfortunately do not manage with German.
I have a 1963 P60 waiting for restoration, and I ended up with an extra P50 engine, Which I decided to use to something completely else. My plan is to put it into a motorcycle frame to build a classic tt racebike. I have an extra Pannonia TLB frame available, so the project name is "Trannonia TLP50".
And now to the actual questions. I would like to start with the engine and tune it up. There is a lot of discussion about tuning the Trabi motor, but it is all in german and I can't read that. I would like to get some good advices to start with and tuning tips of course. There are some "frames" I would like to give to the project.
Firts, I want to keep it as "garage power project", so I am not interested in buying loads of aftermarket tuning parts, but I want to use the original ones: I want to keep the engine 500cc, I wanto to use the original cylinders and heads as well as crank and conrods. There is something that needs to be bought, however. What would be the correct engine bearings for this kind of project and what is a good carburetor option?
Secondly, I am not lookig for extreme power. This is just for fun and I do not want to plow the engine in the first race. So reliability is essential.
I have loads of questions I want to as but here are some that come to my mind right now.
What is a good rev. range for that engine to aim at? I am using either 4 or 5 speed gearbox, so the torque curve has to be kept wide (well, it is a long stroke engine anyway)?
Do you think the motor would work fine in the motorcycle frame without external flywheel? There are flywheels in the crank still.
Do you have good tips for porting forming the cylinders, pistons and head?
What would be good grades for intake timing?

There is some questions to start with.

Hoping to here you soon

regards

Hi,

Welcome here at the forum.
I am not an expert in Trabant engines but would recommend using a 600 cc engine (Trab. 601) rather than a P 50 engine. The 601 engine has more power even in the baseline version.

Best regards

Hi and welcome here,
kat is right - a 600ccm/601 engine would be a much better choise. Spare parts are cheaper and much easyer to find (many online shops offer all the motor parts - you can also purchase tuning parts for more power, for example 3-canal cylinders and stronger crankshafts).

Thanks for quick reply kat and Standard. I am aware of the potential of the 601 engine. I have one extra in my carrage and it is in a better condition even than the P50 one. I was actually going to use it's crancsaft in the P50 engine.
But as I said in the original post, I want to keep this 50s and I want to keep it under 500cc. Basic idea is to build something that could have been built in a home carrage in late 1950s. There is a lot of aftermarket tuning parts awailable for 601, but I am not interested to use those. I want to see what one get out of the this original engine. I would rather try to make the tuning parts than buy them. So essentially, I need knowhow. For carburetor, for example, I would be more interested about the period replacement than a modern replacement. My plan is to qualificate this in to classic tt group, so visible modern parts are not allowed. I am not, however, willing to give away reliability, so modern bearings are welcome.
Trabi P50 was used for rally since the introduction of ther car. So they were tuning this engine right from the beginning. I have a set of cylinders and heads, which are taken form the Auto-Ala oy (Finnish Tarbant importer) official racing team car (they were replaced with tuned set after car was driven in), and even the engine I have has been tuned. It has filed pistons in it. Unfortunately these people who did these are today mostly passed away and there is little original knowhow awailable today.

By the way, I did find this when browsing your site. It'll take me a while to translate it through, so what you could do, is for the beginning, tell me if this guide is worth to study and secondly, give me a preef description about the content and most essential parts, please.
